LSU Offers Louisiana Lineman

Hawkins is committed to Texas A&M

Life is getting interesting for Baldwin, La. lineman Jerald Hawkins. Tabbed as a soft verbal to Texas A&M, the 6-foot-5, 280-pounder is now carrying an offer from the LSU Tigers. What's his next move?

Jerald Hawkins was the most recent commitment to Texas A&M’s 2012 class, an impressive crop by Mike Sherman and his staff that had grown to 22 commitments by early May – four of which hailed from the Bayou State.

On Monday, the LSU staff had seen enough from Hawkins to make their move on one of the Aggies out-of-state pledges.

“I heard from my coach on Monday that LSU offered, and it was just a great day,” Hawkins said. “Les Miles actually called up and offered. That was awesome. I will admit that I have been waiting on it. It was an emotional day, but good emotions.”

Hawkins, who is being recruited to LSU by offensive line coach Greg Studrawa and recruiting coordinator Frank Wilson, said that he felt an offer was close after the staff had begun to increase contact over the past month.

“I heard from coach Frank and he said that he loved how I moved and that I could fit in over there, and then one day I saw coach Stud out at practice and he told my coach the same thing,” Hawkins said. “They like me at offensive tackle. I got the feeling an offer might happen, but I was still really happy and surprised when it came.

“I think my parents were just as excited, though. They like the idea of getting a chance to see me play in front of them.”

Hawkins, who has no set plans for summer camps, will travel to Baton Rouge with his family next weekend to meet with the staff in person.

“I got invited to the Bayou Picnic, so I will be getting down there on the 28th,” he said. “I just want to come and get a feel for everything. I’ve been getting offers from schools like Southern Miss and Memphis, but LSU is the big one.”
