5-star DE Edwards to visit

Five-star prospect Mario Edwards is committed to Florida State, but the Denton, Texas, native has begun to look elsewhere. After a visit to the Texas-OU game last week, the nation's No. 2-ranked defensive end prospect will visit LSU.

Good news, LSU fans.

A No. 1 ranking and a top-ranked defense was enough to grab the attention of one of the most coveted high school players in the country.

Five-star prospect Mario Edwards, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end from Denton Ryan in the Dallas suburbs said the Tigers are now one of his lead teams – despite his pledge to Florida State.

"LSU is definitely a school that I am interested in, and I have been for a while now," Edwards said. "I am verbally committed to play for Florida State, but I still want to keep my options open. I have told the coaches that I want to look around a little, so that's what I am doing.

"Right now LSU and Oklahoma stand out to me."

Edwards' decision to commit to Florida State last March didn't come out of left field. His father, Mario Edwards Sr., played for the Seminoles in the late 1990's before being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the 6th round of the 2000 NFL Draft.

But with the Seminoles' loss to Wake Forest last week, FSU has fallen to 2-3 on the season – far from where many analysts pegged head coach Jimbo Fisher's team to be at the mid-season mark.

"With FSU losing three games in a row, I guess that has me looking around a little bit more than before," Edwards said. "My dad has been in contact with some coaches at other schools, and I think I will get over to see LSU soon. It might be the Auburn weekend.

"I went to the game in Dallas between Texas and Oklahoma, and I will probably get to a game at Oklahoma since it's not a really far drive."

What about the Tigers' fast start has grabbed the nation's No. 2-ranked defensive end prospect's attention?

"I just like the way they are playing defense," Edwards said. "They are undefeated and playing with a lot of confidence. I also really like the defensive line.

"I really have been interested in LSU for a while, but I wanted to let the season play out first before I went and looked at other places."

Moving forward, Edwards said he has a few key things on his mind that should help his decision-making process go smoothly.

"I think I am trying to see which place close to home I can get a degree in three years and play a lot of football," Edwards said. "Being close to family is important, so that's something I am keeping in mind.

"I think I just committed early because every time I went to Florida State I loved it. But that was the only place I was going. Now I need to see what a couple other places are like and what their coaches are thinking. Then I will go from there."

Scout.com ranks Edwards as the No. 8 overall prospect in the class of 2012.
