SCORING RECAP: LSU 42, Georgia 10

Hilliard scored three TDs in the 3rd quarter

How the No. 1 Tigers and No. 12-ranked Bulldogs scored Saturday as LSU survived an ugly first half and stormed to a 42-10 triumph to claim the 2011 SEC Championship.

SCORING RECAP

First quarter

Georgia – Blair Walsh 40 FG, 11:45. DRIVE: 6 plays-40 yards-2:08. KEY PLAYS: With the ball after a dominant opening series on defense, the Bulldogs strike quickly when Aaron Murray floats a 44-yard bomb to Tavarres King on the second play to flip the field. King can’t come up with an on-target throw in the end zone three plays later, though, and the Bulldogs have to settle for Walsh’s kick. Georgia 3, LSU 0

Aron White helped Georgia build an early 10-0 cushion.

GEORGIA – Aron White 12 pass from Aaron Murray (Walsh kick), :42. DRIVE: 6-44-2:30. KEY PLAYS: After gaining an edge in field position, Georgia started with a short field and clicked down the field with Carlton Thomas bruising the Tigers for 21 rushing yards, Murray broke a cold streak with an 11-yard strike to Orson Charles on a crossing route and then zipped the TD to White on a skinny post. Georgia 10, LSU 0

Second quarter

LSU – Tyrann Mathieu 62 punt return (Drew Alleman kick), 5:48. KEY PLAYS: The Tigers’ defense came alive, with Sam Montgomery burying Murray for an 11-yard sack on third down. That forced a punt from the 3 that Drew Butler boomed, but Mathieu dodged and weaved and spun and sidestepped and found his way down the field to give LSU a pulse. Georgia 10, LSU 7

Third quarter

LSU – Kenny Hilliard 15 run (Alleman kick), 12:51. DRIVE: 2-26-:40. KEY PLAYS: On Georgia’s opening series of the half, Murray scrambled on third down and coughed the ball up when Mike Brockers thumped him, and Mathieu recovered at the 26. After a penalty on the Bulldogs, the Tigers netted their initial first down of the day on a 6-yard Jefferson-to-Rueben Randle pass and Hilliard bulled through two tackles on his way to the go-ahead TD. LSU 14, Georgia 10

LSU – Hilliard 4 run (Alleman kick), 10:37. DRIVE: 4-17-1:16. KEY PLAYS: Mathieu struck again, returning another punt an electrifying 46 yards after LSU’s defense forced a third straight three-and-out. Michael Ford crashed for 6 yards, Hilliard pounded away for 7 more and after a near TD on a Jefferson pass to Odell Beckman Jr., Hilliard capped the short march. LSU 21, Georgia 10

LSU – Hilliard 8 pass from Jordan Jefferson (Alleman kick), 3:45. DRIVE: 10-70-4:32. KEY PLAYS: Six different Tigers touched the ball on the best offensive drive of the day, none doing more damage than Alfred Blue, who gashed the Bulldogs for runs of 15 and 20 yards to put LSU in position for the short waggle pass to Hilliard. On the catch, Hilliard leveled cornerback Brandon Boykin on his way to the end zone, a fitting symbol of the period. LSU 28, Georgia 10

Fourth quarter

Alfred Blue finished off the Bulldogs with a 48-yard run in the fourth quarter.

LSU – Alfred Blue 48 run (Alleman kick), 6:17. DRIVE: 4-93-1:51. KEY PLAYS: The Tigers made no secret about their intentions, with Hilliard carrying the ball three times for 17, 12 and 16 yards to soften the Bulldogs up and Blue blazing through for the home run and game-sealing TD. LSU 35, Georgia 10

LSU – Mo Claiborne 45 interception return (Alleman kick), 4:21. KEY PLAYS: With the Bulldogs just trying to gain some respectability, Claiborne missed a golden chance for an interception moments early but didn’t on the second, snaring the ball near the sideline and zig-zagging across the field for the icing on the cake. LSU 42, Georgia 10

Final score: LSU 42, Georgia 10

Records: No. 1 LSU 13-0, No. 12 Georgia 10-3

Attendance: 74,515

Up next: The Tigers will get a chance a third national championship in nine seasons on Jan. 9, 2011, when they face an opponent to be determined at the Superdome in the BCS Championship Game. The BCS bowl matchups will be announced at 7 p.m. Sunday
