The Alexandria Senior High Trojans reached the 2012 Class 4A playoffs, and the future looks good with players like freshman starter William Lyons (J.J.) returning next season.

John Lyons, J.J.'s father, says things happened quickly during spring training.

"We were told early that probably no freshmen would get playing time," the elder Lyons explained. "What happened was that they got into spring practice with a new coach who saw J.J.'s work ethic and saw him reading defenses and coverages.

"J.J. went out and performed and beat defensive backs in one-on-one and 7v7. He got the starting job, which was real big because the last freshman to start at ASH was around a decade ago. Route-running and knowing the open spots are strengths for J.J."

Lyons (5-8, 150) hauled in 10 receptions for 200 yards for the varsity Trojans, who were ousted from the playoffs by the favored St. Augustine Purple Knights and five-star 2014 RB Leonard Fournette.

ASH suffered through an 0-5 start but the Trojans rebounded to win the next five.

"We're going to do the Next Level Athlete event," dad said of offseason plans. "We're going to focus on college camps. I'm going to take him to Texas A&M, LSU and Louisiana Tech. He's also going to California and Arizona to get individual instruction from coaches who are friends and mentors.

"The first school of interest was Oklahoma State. He likes Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Oregon and LSU. J.J. is working to get his 40 down and get faster and stronger. He goes twice a day to train with a strength and conditioning coach. The first session is at 6 A.M."

The frosh was able to hone his craft while learning from ASH senior WR/S Shaan Washington (Texas A&M commit).
