The hardwood Tigers look to shake off an 0-4 start in the conference tonight (7 p.m., SEC Network)…
LSU tops Texas A&M, 58-54
So did Johnny Jones.
LSU's first-year coach wound up with the game ball inside the team locker room after the Tigers pulled off a 58-54 win over visiting Texas A&M.
The Bayou Bengals improve to 10-6 on the season, 1-4 in league play, while Billy Kennedy's Aggies drop to 12-6, 2-3.
Shavon Coleman paced LSU in scoring with a team-high 17 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Backcourt mate Johnny O'Bryant finished with his second consecutive double-double, posting 14 points and 10 rebounds, five on the offensive glass.
But the stat of the night for the Tigers, and the reason the game swung LSU's way after the home team fell into a 14-point first-half deficit, was the 19 steals Jones' men accumulated as a team. Anthony Hickey, at his ball-hawking best, had eight of those swipes as the Tigers' press suffocated A&M and caused 24 Aggie turnovers.
The Aggies got a game-high 19 points from guard Fabyon Harris, but no other player for the visiting team scored in double digits. Elston Turner, the Aggs' leading scorer coming in, had only five points on 1-of-7 shooting.
LSU is back in action Saturday at Kentucky.
