Glenn ready for his return to the mound
LSU starter Cody Glenn
Posted Jun 17, 2013
LSU will give Cody Glenn the start on Tuesday when they play North Carolina in an elimination game at the College World Series. Glenn hasn't pitched in nearly a month, but there isn't a whole lot of concern with the time off that he has had.
OMAHA, Neb. -- After being suspended for the Baton Rouge Regional and only pitching one game in the SEC Tournament,
will make his first appearance in several weeks when he takes the mound against No. 1 seed
on Tuesday afternoon. With
facing elimination following their 2-1 opening round loss to
, it will be up to the 6-4 195 pound left-hander to keep the Tigers alive in Omaha.
Before his long absence from the team began, Glenn had become one of the most efficient pitchers on the LSU staff by compiling a record of 7-2 with a 2.41 ERA. That will be put to the test on Tuesday when Glenn gets the start against the Tar Heels.
Even though he hasn’t been on the mound in several weeks, the matchup with North Carolina doesn’t worry the LSU sophomore. In fact, Glenn feels very prepared to get back on the mound.
“A lot of people have asked me about not being on the mound in a while,” said Glenn. “It doesn’t bother me because I got good work in last week and I’ve thrown to live hitters a couple of times now. I felt pretty good. I threw a bullpen at TD Ameritrade the other day and I felt really good. I should go out there and do what I’ve done all season.”
Glenn knows that he will eventually get in the zone on Tuesday and he hopes that it will be early in the game.
“I have to have a good start,” said Glenn. “I’m going to catch my groove and I hope I can do that early in the game so that I can pitch deep into the game.”
The Tar Heels feature a lineup that consists of mostly left-handed hitters – seven to be exact. Entering the matchup, Glenn hasn’t put a whole lot of stock into the fact that he has an advantage against the North Carolina lineup.
He is putting his faith in LSU pitching coach
, something Glenn feels will result in success on Tuesday just as it has all season long.
“We’ve talked a little bit about how many lefties they have,” said Glenn. “I don’t read too much into it because coach Dunn does all the scouting reports on teams. He calls the pitches and I will trust his calls.”
LSU head coach
made the decision to give Glenn the ball on Monday morning and informed his prospective starter shortly thereafter. While Mainieri has a tremendous amount confidence in Glenn, there is a little bit of worry regarding the fact that Glenn hasn’t pitched in a game in quite some time.
“It is a little bit concerning,” said Mainieri, when asked about the time off that Glenn has had. “But he’s had good outings in practice recently and he has been sharp in his bullpen sessions.”
Paul Mainieri and LSU met with the media on Monday prior to going through practice. Most of the information discussed was in regards to the loss to UCLA on Sunday. Click the link below for all of the latest tidbits from LSU.
