No. 29 - Lamar Louis
LSU LB Lamar Louis (US Presswire)
Posted Jun 25, 2013
All summer long TSD will unveil our top 50 LSU players for the 2013 season. TSD's Ben Love, Austin Cooper and Hunter Paniagua compiled the rankings. Coming in at number 29 is sophomore linebacker Lamar Louis.
Every weekday until the
football team reports for Fall Camp on Sunday, Aug. 4, TSD will unveil another player in our top 50 Tigers for the 2013 season. We arrived at this list by combining individual rankings from TSD’s Austin Cooper, Ben Love and Hunter Paniagua. For example, a player who received a No. 1 vote got 50 points, a No. 2 vote got 49 points, and so on. Every player who received votes had his points totaled across all three individual lists, and the result was our final TSD ranking. All players, including incoming signees, were eligible for selection.
No. 29 – LB
A rising sophomore that’s earned the nickname “Hammer” from his teammates, linebacker Lamar Louis comes in at number 29 on TSD’s top 50 countdown of LSU players for 2013. Louis (6-foot, 220 pounds) saw most of his action a season ago during a busy two-game stretch against SEC East opposition. Amid injuries to
, Louis entered the Tigers’ game at Florida and finished with four tackles. A week later he registered two quarterback hurries in LSU’s home win over South Carolina. For his true freshman season Louis totaled 13 tackles.
He heads into the 2013 season with a lot of promise, currently standing as the team’s backup middle linebacker, a move he began making this past spring. Louis has the flexibility to play outside ‘backer as well and has cross-trained at both spots under position coach
. And, showing just how strong LSU’s linebacking corps is in 2013, Louis is the second of seven LBs to come off the board in TSD’s countdown (freshman
was No. 47). So be on the lookout for five more members of the Tigers’ second level of defense in the coming weeks.
By The Numbers
Louis’ highest ranking: 20th
Louis’ lowest ranking: 34th
Why this ranking is too high
We’ve entered territory on the countdown where most of the players are starters. Louis, despite his considerable talents, is clearly a second-stringer at this point, buried behind a slew of upperclassmen and having to jockey with his Class of 2012 linebacker mates for position. Louis also lacks some of the speed fellow linebackers like
Why this ranking is too low
It’s not his fault LSU is loaded at linebacker in 2013. Louis would be a no-doubt starter on many college teams across America and, for whatever slight shortcomings he may have in speed, the Breaux Bridge native is easily one of the hardest hitters on the team. He also has a lot of athleticism, having successfully played the running back position on the prep level just two seasons ago. Louis’ best days in an LSU uniform are ahead of him.
