All summer long TSD will unveil our top 50 LSU football players for the 2013 season. TSD's Ben Love, Austin Cooper and Hunter Paniagua compiled the rankings. Today, one of the most exciting true freshman on the team comes in at number 26.

Publisher’s Notes: Every weekday until the LSU football team reports for Fall Camp on Sunday, Aug. 4, TSD will unveil another player in our top 50 Tigers for the 2013 season. We arrived at this list by combining individual rankings from TSD’s Austin Cooper, Ben Love and Hunter Paniagua. For example, a player who received a No. 1 vote got 50 points, a No. 2 vote got 49 points, and so on. Every player who received votes had his points totaled across all three individual lists, and the result was our final TSD ranking. All players, including incoming signees, were eligible for selection.

No. 26 – QB Anthony Jennings

One of the most exciting newcomers to LSU’s team in 2013, quarterback Anthony Jennings (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) is the second highest rated true freshman on TSD’s top 50 countdown. Also, despite entering Fall Camp at third on the QB depth chart, Jennings ranks second amongst Tiger signal callers on our list – redshirt sophomore Stephen Rivers checked in at No. 45.

Jennings impressed just about everybody this spring as an early enrollee, separating himself from fellow frosh Hayden Rettig and making a bid to see the field right away in 2013. Here’s what offensive coordinator Cam Cameron told TSD about Jennings prior to the spring game: “The way I view Anthony: Some people use the term ‘dual-threat quarterback’ and then ‘pocket quarterback.’ I look at him as a pocket-mobile quarterback. He’s very bright.” That football IQ and athleticism will make Jennings hard to keep off the field this fall.

By The Numbers

Jennings’ highest ranking: 20th
Jennings’ lowest ranking: 31st

Why this ranking is too high

Jennings technically still stands third on the depth chart at quarterback for LSU, behind Rivers and starter Zach Mettenberger. At this point in the countdown, most players are either starters or influential rotational players. Then there’s the whole issue of LSU designing “packages” for Jennings. That same whisper has been made about numerous athletic players in the past for the Tigers, never to come to fruition. It may well be a new day under Cameron for the LSU offense, but, given the history of rigidity with this offense, some things need to be seen to be believed.

Why this ranking is too low

When an early enrollee comes in and makes the kind of waves that Jennings did, the sky is truly the limit for that player’s future. Plus, considering Mettenberger’s lack of mobility and struggles with movement even within the pocket, Jennings offers the perfect change of pace for the LSU offense. It seems fairly clear that Jennings may be the future of the position for the Tigers, but it wouldn’t be wise to count out his influence on the purple and gold in year one.
