Heading into the 2013 season, sophomore safety Corey Thompson is a special teams ace looking to take…
No. 25 - Corey Thompson
No. 25 – S Corey Thompson
When it comes to guys who look the part of an SEC football player, sophomore safety Corey Thompson (6-foot-2, 210 pounds) passes the eyeball test as well as just about any LSU Tiger. As a true freshman, the Missouri City, Tex., native played in all 13 games in 2012, finishing with 11 tackles. Thompson compiled three tackles apiece versus Towson and Mississippi State. He even saw time in the second half of the Alabama game when starters Eric Reid and Craig Loston were dealing with injuries.
Entering 2013 Thompson will continue his roles on all of LSU's special teams coverage units, but there is a question of how much his role will expand at safety. The Tigers return Loston, a redshirt senior, at strong safety and junior Ronald Martin at free safety. Thompson enjoyed a good spring and currently stands as the third safety in line on the depth chart and on TSD's top 50 countdown (nickel back/safety Micah Eugene has already come off at No. 41). He'll be a starter in the LSU secondary one day. Right now it's just a quesiton of when.
By The Numbers
Thompson's highest ranking: 19th
Thompson's lowest ranking: 36th
Why this ranking is too high
Thompson still has to supplant either Martin or Loston, or wait until injury strikes, to enter the starting lineup for LSU's defense. Until that happens, he's a special teams ace who will make only occasional contributions in the secondary. It may be difficult to justify a player of that description belonging in the top half of our top 50 countdown.
Why this ranking is too low
Two reasons: One, Thompson is an absolute physical specimen who can motor. Two, it may take an injury to bring Thompson into a starting role, but there aren't many LSU players who have dealt with more injuries in their career than Loston. With Reid no longer around, there's one less barrier to Thompson seeing the field. It seems almost inevitable that he'll be asked to make an impact defensively this fall.
