TSD's Ben Love caught up with LSU defensive end Jordan Allen after the Tigers' 56-17 win over UAB…
No. 24 - Jordan Allen
No. 24 – DE Jordan Allen
At this level of TSD's top 50 countdown, if a player lacks experience in an LSU uniform, it's usually because he's younger. That's not the case with defensive end Jordan Allen, who will be a redshirt junior in 2013. Still, despite passing three years on campus so far with only four career games played and one tackle to his name, Allen is beginning to carve a spot for himself on the Tiger defensive line.
Standing 6-foot-6 and 253 pounds, Allen, a West Monroe native, proved this spring that he's not only back from a knee injury which sidelined him in 2012 but also ready to compete with a young up-and-comer like Danielle Hunter. It may have been Hunter who entered spring as the starter opposite junior Jermauria Rasco, but it was Allen who left spring that way. He remains one of LSU's best options against the run at defensive end this fall and will be a factor if he stays healthy.
By The Numbers
Allen's highest ranking: 17th
Allen's lowest ranking: 33rd
Why this ranking is too high
Allen hasn't proven yet that he can produce on the field, or stay healthy for that matter. His one career tackle came in the Northwestern State game in 2011 as a redshirt freshman, so there isn't much in his history at LSU that suggests he's ready to start in the SEC. Allen is also a different breed of end when compared to the other two primary candidates at the position year – Hunter and Rasco – as well those who played a season ago for the Tigers – Lavar Edwards, KeKe Mingo and Sam Montgomery. The one thing all five of those players have in common that Allen doesn't: great quickness.
Why this ranking is too low
Other than Rasco, Allen is the only defensive end who's been around long enough to remember what it was like when LSU was atop the SEC. It also can't be understated just how strong of a spring Allen had and the impression he left on Brick Haley and the Tigers' staff. There's also some value to the fact that Allen could give some needed beef to an LSU line which could be on the thin side in 2013.
