BIRMINGHAM -- Tiger Sports Digest's Ben Love takes a look at LSU's defensive line, one of the…
No. 15 - Jermauria Rasco
No. 15 – DE Jermauria Rasco
The 2013 NFL Draft proved to be quite fond of LSU defenders, nowhere more so than along the defensive line. Junior defensive end Jermauria Rasco typifies the next wave of Tigers who've shown flashes of greatness but will now be called upon to produce on a down-in, down-out type basis. Rasco is the highest-rated defensive end on TSD's countdown and enters Fall Camp LSU's lead bookend as well.
A season ago, sitting behind Sam Montgomery, KeKe Mingo and Lavar Edwards, Rasco compiled only 10 tackles, two for loss. The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Shreveport native was actually more productive in his true freshman campaign, making 17 tackles, 3.5 for loss and two sacks during LSU's steamroller regular season in 2011. Rasco appears at his best when rushing the quarterback and using speed moves off the edge. He's also coming back from shoulder surgery, which stemmed from a small injury in spring camp.
By The Numbers
Rasco's highest ranking: 13th
Rasco's lowest ranking: 21st
Why this ranking is too high
While Rasco has shown promise and glimpses of being SEC-ready, he has only been an apprentice to this point. Much like defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, Rasco hasn't yet been required to be the man at his position. All that will change this fall, and Rasco will have to show his mettle. Plus, there's the fact that he's coming off shoulder surgery in April and is probably accurately an inch or two shorter than the 6-foot-3 he's listed at on LSU's official team page.
Why this ranking is too low
Unlike some of the other defenders replacing NFL-bound players at LSU, Rasco has walked the walk between the lines already in TigerTown. He was a real menace for opposing quarterbacks during his spot duty as a freshman, which even occurred as early as the third quarter in several SEC contests, most notably Auburn. There's plenty of reason to believe Rasco is ready to take on added responsibility, especially after watching and learning Mingo, Montgomery and crew for two seasons.
