LSU opened the contact period with a bang, spanning the country to meet with some of their top remaining targets. From Kenny Young to Malik McDowell, Malachi Dupre to Deondre Clark, TSD has all the notes on who the LSU coaches visited Thursday.

Thursday was the first official day of the new contact period, and the LSU assistants scattered across the country to hit the recruiting trail.

The Tiger coaches met with many of their 2014 targets as well as several underclassmen.

One of LSU’s biggest schools of focus was John Curtis in New Orleans. Both John Chavis and Adam Henry made stops there to see Kenny Young and Malachi Dupre. Chavis’ visit with Young comes the day before he departs for an official visit to Texas A&M, and the LSU coaches are still working to keep this four-star LB close to home.

The Tigers are certainly working that angle and also selling him on where Young would fit on the defense and the opportunity he’d have for early playing time. The Aggies seem to be growing more confident by the day when it comes to Young, who met with the A&M coaches yesterday as well, so it’s vital that LSU stays in his ear. He’ll take an official visit to Baton Rouge on Jan. 27.

All reports on Dupre continue to be positive leading into his official visit this weekend. LSU continued to develop its strong relationship with the nation’s No. 2 WR during the visit Thursday and all signs still point to him landing at LSU on Signing Day.

Brick Haley spent part of his Thursday working to secure one of LSU’s more at-risk commits. Haley visited with Deondre Clark and his family in advance of Clark’s official visit to Oklahoma this weekend. There’s no denying the Sooners have made an impressive charge in recent weeks, and at this point, Oklahoma almost appears likely to flip the Tiger commit before it’s all said and done.

Can LSU hold on to Deondre Clark?
But LSU isn’t giving up, and they will get Clark on campus Jan. 24 for an official visit to try and keep him in purple and gold. Haley’s in-home visit with the Clarks did receive rave reviews. Clark’s mother told Scout’s Bob Pryzbolo, publisher of SoonersIllustrated.com, "Coach Haley has got to be one of the most down to earth people I've met. I've ran across some fake folk in my time but not with him."

Will that be enough to keep Clark on LSU’s commit list? That remains to be seen. But he won’t flip without LSU making its best case to keep him.

The head coach himself, Les Miles, was also on the trail Thursday. He visited with four-star defensive lineman Malik McDowell, who will take an official visit to LSU on Jan. 24. This was Miles’ first time meeting McDowell in-person as Coach Haley has mostly led the charge in his recruitment.

Haley’s a large reason why LSU’s still in contention, and getting some facetime with Miles should only help the Tigers’ chances, as slim as they may be. Most feel that McDowell is a lock to stay close to home in the Midwest, but he’s giving LSU a fair shot and LSU is taking advantage of the opening.

Miles’ next visit will go to Adoree Jackson, possibly as early as Friday, though the timing may not work out. LSU is expected to introduce Jeff Grimes as its new OL coach on Friday, and Jackson will fly home to California on Friday after spending Thursday in Illinois, hosting coaches with his parents. Jackson met with USC, Tennessee and Florida on Thursday, and look for Miles to meet with him in the near future.

Frank Wilson spent his Thursday in his old stomping grounds, checking in on his two RB commits. Wilson met with both Leonard Fournette and Darrel Williams, and everything remains perfect with both prospects. Wilson has high expectations for his two soon-to-be freshmen running backs, and both will have the opportunity for significant carries next season.

Darrel Williams
LSU has high hopes for Darrel Williams
Everyone knows what Fournette is capable of, but don’t sleep on Williams next season. According to his coach, Williams is up to 226 pounds on 4 percent body fat. He was also timed recently with a 4.49-second 40-yard dash. LSU thinks Williams has a lot of potential and it should be interesting to see both him and Fournette run behind the same offensive line.

Wilson also popped in on some of New Orleans’ top underclassmen. He met with St. Augustine 2015 WR Stanley Morgan, who picked up an offer from LSU earlier this week. Morgan currently ranks as a three-star prospect. Wilson also met with Helen Cox athlete Dion Ray, who will likely be a CB or WR on the next level. LSU hasn’t offered him yet, but he may very well end up as one of the state’s top playmakers for 2015.

Because LSU still hasn’t introduced a new OL coach, Steve Kragthorpe spent Thursday on the road. He visited with LSU’s two OL commits Garrett Brumfield and William Clapp in advance of their official visits this weekend. Neither prospect wavered after Greg Studrawa left the program, and Kragthorpe informed both prospects they will meet the new coach when they arrive Friday for their official visits.

Steve Ensminger spent Thursday recruiting Shreveport. He visited with Notre Dame commit Jerry Tillery at Evangel. Though Tillery is extremely firm in his pledge to the Irish, LSU will continue to try and keep him in-state and will hope that a new OL coach may open the door. That doesn’t seem likely though considering Tillery grew up a Notre Dame fan and really values the education that school would provide.

Definitely look for the in-home visits to pick up next week, as Friday will mostly be spent preparing for the 11 visitors coming to campus this weekend. Derrick Kelly, Travonte Valentine and many other prospects are planning to host the LSU coaches next week, so now’s only the beginning of what should be a hectic end to the 2014 recruiting cycle.
