Signing Day Capsule: Clifton Garrett

LSU LB signee Clifton Garrett

LSU has received a National Letter of Intent from LB Clifton Garrett. The five-star prospect is officially a Tiger.

Though Clifton Garrett grew up squarely in B1G country, he always had his sights set on the SEC. So when LSU came through with an offer almost a year ago, Garrett quickly put the Tigers near the top of his list. Garrett was also high on schools like Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Florida when he first ventured south for unofficial visits in April 2013. One of his stops was Baton Rouge for the LSU Spring Game, where he received loads of one-on-one time with Les Miles, including a personal campus tour led by the Mad Hatter.

After that trip, Garrett named LSU his leader, a title the Tigers never lost. Garrett started taking official visits once football season started. Gainesville, Knoxville and Oxford were his first three stops before he returned to Baton Rouge on Nov. 23 for the Tigers' game against Texas A&M. That visit marked Garrett's parents' first trip to LSU, and the coaches did all they needed to sell the entire family on what they had to offer. Garrett made a silent commitment to the staff before leaving then made his decision official on Dec. 17.

Garrett finished the 2014 recruiting cycle as the nation's No. 1 MLB, a no-brainer five-star prospect. He already looks like a SEC linebacker and his play on the field mirrors that. Garrett is an absolute monster between the sidelines, even though he's one of the nicest guys you'll meet off the field. Garrett's a physical specimen that plays downhill and fills the rushing lanes with authority. He's a sure tackler that rarely misses when he gets his hands on the ballcarrier.

Garrett fits the prototypical mold for a MIKE backer in John Chavis' defense. While it may take some time for him to pick up on the intricacies of the college game, Garrett has the potential to step in and play immediately. How quickly he adapts to the next level could determine how big an impact he makes in 2014.
