Signing Day Capsule: Trey Lealaimatafao
LSU DT signee Trey Lealaimatafao
Posted Feb 4, 2014
LSU has received a National Letter of Intent from DT Trey Lealaimatafao. The three-star prospect is officially a Tiger.
entered the mix late for
but did an outstanding job in the final three weeks to secure the signing of this three-star defensive tackle. Lealaimatafao originally committed to
back in March 2013 and seemed locked in with the Longhorns until
announced his resignation in November. He reentered the recruiting world with a bang, taking official visits to
and Texas in four consecutive weekends.
LSU officially began its courtship of Lealaimatafao when they extended him an offer on Jan. 9. A week later, he would take an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge to get his first look at the LSU campus as a recruit. He was no stranger to the city though, as a large chunk of his family resides in the Red Stick, and his cousin,
, is a LSU women’s basketball legend. He followed that LSU visit with his fifth and final official visit to
the following week, and those two would finish as the two finalists for his commitment, which he gave to LSU on National Signing Day.
Lealaimatafao ranks as the No. 36 defensive tackle in the country. At about 6-foot, 300 pounds, he’s a little ball of explosion with tremendous strength and power off the line. But Lealaimatafao isn’t just a wrecking ball. He’s quick on his feet and is just as adept at running around a blocker as he was bursting through them.
LSU desperately needed bodies to shore up the lack of depth at defensive tackle. Lealaimatafao will have several players ahead of him, so a redshirt in 2014 is likely heading his way. That should benefit him though as he’ll need time to adjust to the increased physicality of SEC football. But Lealaimatafao certainly has potential and could factor in as a key contributor early in his career.
