Monday Recruiting Tidbits

Five-star QB Torrance Gibson

TSD has a fresh batch of LSU recruiting tidbits to start your week. A five-star QB talks favorites after visiting recently, one of the nation's hottest DBs has set a visit to Baton Rouge and we examine the impressive film of LSU's most recent in-state offer.

Five-star QB Torrance Gibson visited LSU last week and has the Tigers near the top of his list after a Spring Break college tour.

Scout's Amy Campbell caught up with Gibson at the IMG 7-on-7 event this past weekend. Check out the full video interview below, but here's what Gibson had to say about his trip to Baton Rouge.

"It was great," Gibson said. "I saw a lot of people I knew. I got to sit down with Coach Cameron and we just talked and talked. He coached in the NFL, so if he can coach me like he did those NFL quarterbacks, it would mean a lot."

In addition to LSU, Gibson also visited Oklahoma, Auburn, Tennessee, Clemson and Florida last week. He intends to also visit Ohio State in the near future and would like to make return trips to both Knoxville and Baton Rouge.

He will narrow down his long list of suitors in early May with a final decision possible before the end of the summer. LSU feels very encouraged with where they left things after Gibson's visit, and locking down another trip would go a long way in the Tigers' chances.

Coach Cameron is vital in this recruitment, and he's a big reason why LSU's a serious contender at this point. He made multiple trips to visit Gibson in-person during the contact periods earlier this year, and American Heritage High School will be an early stop once the evaluation period opens in a couple weeks.

Gibson is the No. 1 QB on LSU's board and he falls in the same mold as Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris, continuing the trend of dual-threat signal callers that Cameron's bringing to this offense.

DB Jaylon Lane plans to visit LSU this weekend
Recent DB offer Jaylon Lane (Nacogdoches, Texas) plans to visit LSU this weekend "if everything goes as planned.

The Tigers offered Lane late last week and LSU's one of more than a dozen schools to come calling recently. He added about 10 just last week to cap off a busy month for this fast-rising prospect.

Lane originally committed to Ole Miss on March 7 but backed off that pledge in less than two weeks. He's recently visited both Texas and Texas A&M and intends to check out Notre Dame among other schools this summer.

LSU will get its crack at him this weekend when he arrives for the Spring Game. Though the relationship between the two parties is still fresh, Lane said the Tigers are an early standout in his recruitment.

"I really like them," Lane said. "They do really great things with their DBs, and for sure they're in my top schools."

LSU handed out another in-state offer in the 2016 class this past weekend. Neville DT Rashard Lawrence picked up the offer while in town for the Tigers' scrimmage on Saturday.

That marked the first offer for Lawrence, kicking off what should be an active recruitment for the sophomore lineman. LSU does get a big advantage by being the first in, and they'll hope the home-state roots pay off down the line.

Lawrence's uncle, Oliver, was also a linebacker for LSU in the late 1980s, so following in the family footsteps should be another attraction for him. Lawrence has said he plans to enroll early as well, which would accelerate his decision timeline, though it's far too early in the process for him to know his plans.

Lawrence has not yet been ranked by Scout, though his film's right there with the state's top ranked sophomore, five-star LSU commit Ed Alexander. Lawrence is a massive prospect at such a young age, measuring about 6-foot-3, 300 pounds.

He's explosive off the line and never gets pushed back. He dominates blockers and fights through double teams exceptionally well. He's a sure tackler that swallows the ball carrier once he gets his arms around him. He even shows some quickness and agility, flashing a little spin move in some of his clips.

Check out his sophomore highlights below:
