Miles lands "biggest" recruit so far

Les Miles picked up a huge commitment on Friday when Elton (La.) defensive tackle Al "A.J." Woods told him he wanted to be a Tiger. Woods, a 6-4, 327-pounder with 5.2-speed, is quite arguably the top defensive tackle in the South and one of the top five in all of America.

What prompted his early pledge?

"To me it's like the longer you wait the more pressure you put on yourself," said Woods, who is rated the No. 2 player overall in Tiger Rag's Top 30. "I always thought I would go to LSU so I went ahead and committed."

Woods informed Miles of his decision in person after he competed in the state track and field event on the LSU campus. According to Woods, the Tigers' headman could not stop smiling.

"He was happy," said Woods. "He said he was so happy and he was glad I made my commitment so I could focus on my senior year and my grades."

Along with the LSU offer, Woods considered offers from USC, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Miami, Clemson, Ole Miss, Nebraska and Georgia. With all of those prestigious offers was there really a chance the standout tackle would shun the Tigers?

"I was thinking about going out-of-state but my parents made me realize that LSU has a great program and great academics," he said. "It's only an hour and a half away from home so they can watch me play every Saturday."

Woods said he only needs a couple of more points on his ACT score to become a full academic qualifier.

Once that happens then he can really sit back and enjoy his last year of high school.
