Utah signal caller chooses LSU

Alex Cate

Many felt the odds of LSU landing a blue-chip quarterback in this class were not in the Tigers' favor but Les Miles hit the jackpot on Sunday when Alex Cate of Salt Lake City (Utah) Cottonwood gave him a verbal commitment.

Cate, a 6-1, 200-pounder, is one of the top signal callers on the West Coast and he sported an impressive offer list that included Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska, Washington, Oklahoma State, Arizona State and Arizona among others. As a junior he a fabulous season with 3,487 yards and 40 touchdowns through the air.

Cate and his father recently made a round of unofficial visits to check out the Tigers, Arizona, Nebraska and Oklahoma State. Baton Rouge, La. is a long way from Salt Lake City so what was it that put the Tigers over the top.

"Really it was the coaches and just the overall atmosphere over there," said Cate, who projects as a full academic qualifier. "I really got along well with the coaches and I can tell that they really know what they are talking about. I got such a good feeling from talking with them."

Cate is set to graduate at mid-term and will be able to enroll at LSU in time for spring practice. Not only are the Tigers getting a quality quarterback but they get the added bonus of getting into camp early.

"I can't wait to get down there," he said. "I had a blast on my trip and I think it is going to be a great place to spend the next four or five years."

Cate has heard a lot about Tiger Stadium and the tradition of it being one of the best venues in America. He plans on witnessing the excitement of a Saturday night in Tiger Stadium first hand during the fall and that is something he is eagerly looking forward to.

"I've heard so much about the tradition and the tailgating," he said. "They say it is one of the best game day atmospheres in all of football."
