Toms logs top five finish at US Open

For the second time this season, former LSU All-American and current PGA Tour standout David Toms has earned a top-10 finish in a major championship as he tied for fifth place at the 107th U.S. Open Championship at historic Oakmont Country Club on Sunday.

Toms posted a 72-hole total of 9-over par 289 on one of the more demanding courses in U.S. Open history as he finished tied with former Georgia standout Bubba Watson to equal his best career finish at the premier championship sponsored by the United States Golf Association.

The Monroe, La., native wrapped up the championship with a solid round of 2-over 72 after opening with scores of 72, 72 and 73 at the par-70 layout.

After making bogey on two of his first three holes Sunday, Toms settled down to finish even-par over the last 15 holes en route to a 72.

Toms has now earned a total of eight top-10 finishes in major championships during his illustrious career on the PGA Tour, including a ninth-place finish at The Masters earlier this season and a win at the 2001 PGA Championship at the Atlanta Athletic Club.

In addition, Toms earned $248,948 for his performance and moved into 16th place in the race for the FedEx Cup the Tour’s new playoff-style championship points race. He also earned an exemption to compete in the 108th U.S. Open Championship at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego from June 12-15, 2008.

Angel Cabrera of Cordoba, Argentina, fired a 1-under 69 in Sunday’s final round to earn his first career victory on the PGA Tour and first in a major as he finished one shot ahead of Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk with a 72-hole score of 5-over 285.

The Tour’s third major championship of the season is scheduled for July

19-22 as the British Open Championship returns to Carnoustie Golf Club in Angus, United Kingdom, for the seventh time in the club’s storied history.

Woods is the defending champion as he won the 2006 Open Championship at legendary Old Course at St. Andrew’s last season.
