Hurst always knew

While keeping the best players in Louisiana usually gets most of the attention, an underrated aspect of LSU’s success on the football field the last few seasons has been its ability to cherry pick some of the best players from states across the southeast. Last year LSU signed seven players from surrounding southeastern area states, including Alex Hurst from Arlington, Tennessee.

Alex Hurst turned a few heads with his surprise commitment to LSU last October, and despite saying his pledge was 100% solid from the beginning, other schools did not stop pursuing him easily.

“I chose LSU over Tennessee, Notre Dame, and Alabama,” Hurst said. “Those were my other top choices. And then after I committed I still had those schools and some others like Ole Miss and Florida trying to get me to visit, but I already knew I was going to LSU.”

After committing to the Tigers about halfway through his senior season, Hurst was able to put together a solid effort on the field in the in the second half with recruiting behind him.

“We kept stats for the offensive lineman but I don’t remember what they are off hand,” Hurst said. “But I made first team all-county and first team all-state. I also played in the Memphis All-Star Game.”

Since his senior season has ended Hurst has been spending a lot more time in the weight room doing the workout regimen sent to him by the LSU strength and conditioning staff.

“I’m doing Coach Moffit’s workout,” Hurst said. “It’s a lot more organized than the workouts I used to do. I also feel like I’m benefiting much more from his workout than my old one. Now I’m up to 6’5 and 320 pounds. That’s right around the size where the coaches want me to come in at.”

Because of his busy schedule coupled with the distance from Arlington to Baton Rouge, Hurst was unable to make it to any of LSU’s spring practices or the spring game. However, he did make it down to campus one last time before officially suiting up for LSU this summer.

“I went to the national championship celebration with my dad,” said the Memphis area native. “It felt good to be there. Honestly I felt lucky that I was given the opportunity to come play for a team like this. It makes me even more eager to help LSU football as best I can.”

In less than a month Hurst will be moving to Baton Rouge for good to begin summer workouts and attend summer school.

“My first night in Baton Rouge will be June 2nd,” he said. “My GPA is a 2.9 and ACT is either a 19 or 20. They haven’t told me who my roommates will be yet, but that’s not really a big deal to me. They did tell me I would most likely be #71 though.”

Even though the start of his college career is just a few weeks away, Hurst says he’s not sure yet what his role on the team will be for the 2008 season.

“The coaches haven’t really discussed their plans for me next season yet,” said the 3-star tackle prospect. “I know I’m coming in as a tackle, but that’s about it. But it doesn’t matter if I play or if I redshirt because I’m fine with either. Redshirting wouldn’t be a bad thing at all because it helps with your development as a player and makes it easier with academics your freshman year.”

No matter what his role on the team is next year, Hurst thinks the Tigers just need to take things slowly and let cards fall as they may.

“I think the first team goal is to win the west,” he said. “We need to make it to Atlanta first. Once we get there just win that game and see what happens. Everything else will take care of itself.”
