LSU lands juco punter

Miles got his punter

LSU picked up an unexpected commitment on Thursday afternoon when Fort Scott (Kansas) Community College punter Derek Helton pledged his services to the Les Miles and the Tigers.

“We’ve been talking for about a week and they wanted me to come down and visit because they were 99 percent sure they were going to offer me,” said Derek Helton. “Me and coach drove down and toured the campus and talked to the coaches and we loved everything about it.

“After we got through touring the campus coach Miles asked me what I thought and I told him I loved it. He said good and then said he hoped I liked it enough to want to be his punter. After I thought about it for a few minutes I told him I has his answer and it was ‘yes’”.

Helton is considered one of the top junior college punters in the country according to one of the top kicking coaches in the country in Chris Sailer.

He will graduate in December and plans to enroll at LSU in January.

We got disconnected while Helton was driving back home so check back for more on this surprise commitment as we will have more on his decision in the near future.
