Yet for Russell Shepard, it simply comes naturally.
With the Mississippi State game bringing in a number of top recruits, both committed and still on the board, Shepard made sure he was in Baton Rouge to see everything go down.
"When I found out all those guys were coming down for homecoming I knew I had to get into town," said Shepard, who led his team to a victory on Friday night by rushing for 257 yards and three scores, and passing for 169 and two touchdowns. "It was a great time. I got a chance to catch up with Chris [Davenport] and them. Stavion [Lowe] even came all the way from Brownwood. It's always fun to get us together in Baton Rouge."
One of the top priorities for Shepard heading into the weekend was to show the Seminole Trio the ropes. Mission accomplished?
"I would definitely say it was a success," Shepard said. "Andre [Debose] really likes it, and Dyron [Dye] and Ray Ray [Armstrong] seem to open up more every time I see them. A few of us sat down with them and we just talked about everything. From what I understand they really like the atmosphere. I mean, when you go on the field and the fans are chanting Andre's name, it makes you feel good. There is no denying that."
With the influx of talent being recruited from the Sunshine State into Louisiana each season, the success of those players on the field pays huge dividends off of it.
"The Seminole kids love [wide receiver Demetrius] Byrd," Shepard said. "When he scored they just went crazy. Ray Ray even jumped out of his seat. It was pretty funny. All in all it was a great game.
“The fans stayed in it the entire time,” added Shepard. “It was just important to show them how much this community gets behind the football team. It's just a great college atmosphere, especially when the students are going crazy. I feel like we could have won by more, but Mississippi State is a very good team."
With the game also marking the first start for Texas-native Jarrett Lee, Shepard got an up close look at where the Tigers stand heading into the next few years.
"I was really proud of Jarrett," Shepard said. "He could be the starter for a long time the way he is playing. He has grown a lot in a short amount of time, and that's what you got to do to be successful. I also felt like things really can open up next season as well. With Jarrett playing well, I feel like I could come in and mix things up. We fit into completely different schemes, so I think I could bring a little change of pace to the game. It should be fun."
Of course, Shepard realizes that no spot is guaranteed.
"I have to come in and prove that I even deserve to be on the field first," Shepard said, making sure not to get ahead of himself thinking of the future. "Competition is a crazy thing. You look at a team like Ohio State and [quarterback Todd] Boeckman and you see what I am talking about. He was a starter there and took them to a national championship game. A year later he is sitting on the bench as a true freshman is running the show. You just have to stay motivated and on top of your game at all times to ensure you have that spot. That is what makes competition so great. It motivates you to be the best."
At the game, Shepard heard the chants of his name resounding from the crowd as he went onto the field.
Still, the five-star remained humble.
"It was cool and all," Shepard said. "I mean, it's all fun now. But when I get down there and spend the next four or five years, it is a completely different story. It just goes back to earning everything people throw your way."
Shepard plans to sit down with the coaches this afternoon to review the game and then it’s back home to Houston.
"I am going to go over to the office and meet with coach Miles and coach [Gary] Crowton," Shepard said. "We are just going to run down what we saw last night. I have some questions about things, but other than that it should just be a good overview and talk before I hit the road."
Leaving Baton Rouge after another weekend of recruiting, Shepard feels this trip was another positive page in the LSU recruiting book.
"I just wanted everyone to have fun," he said. "That's exactly what we did, and we got the victory. When guys come in for a visit and it goes as well as it has been, you know that things are moving in the right direction."
