Elliot Porter’s stocky was already soaring as he headed to the LSU camp. The past month has seen scholarship offers come his way from Florida State, Nebraska, Texas Tech, Mississippi State and others. Still, he felt like he had something to prove on Monday.
“When I got there I felt like that was my chance to show the coaches I could play at that level,” Porter said. “I worked out with the defensive linemen one day and I thought I did pretty good. But, I also worked out on the offensive line and that is what seemed to do it.”
The “seemed to do it” that Porter (6-4, 275) alluded to was the fact that his performance on the offensive side of the ball earned him a scholarship offer from head coach Les Miles.
“After I checked out of camp, I talked to Coach Miles and he said that he wanted to offer me a scholarship,” explained Porter. “I went there with something to prove and I guess I proved it.
“Coach said they were impressed with how athletic I was and how I had good feet. He said I had a lot of things they look for in offensive linemen.”
Porter said that he could sense that Miles wanted a commitment on the spot but he still has some visits that he wants to take. Although Porter isn’t ready to pull the trigger it doesn’t mean that the offer wasn’t welcomed with open arms.
“Anytime LSU offers it’s going to be big, but especially when you’re from Louisiana,” explained Porter. “This was one I was waiting on and it puts LSU up there at the top. I don’t have a list or anything but LSU would be up real high.
“It’s just a good feeling that you get from being over here and it is LSU. It’s close to home and just a lot of things that go through your mind when LSU offers.”
Note: Porter was in on 85 tackles with 20 for loss and 11 sacks as a junior.
