BEST INDIVIDUAL
GAME
PERFORMANCES
The best performances in a
single game
1. 2001 – Rohan Davey
versus Alabama
To put things in perspective,
JaMarcus Russell’s career-high passing performance was 332 yards versus Notre Dame in last year’s Sugar Bowl. On Nov. 3, 2001, Rohan Davey eclipsed that total
early in the second half. Davey completed 34 of 44 passes for 528 yards and two
touchdowns as LSU rolled over Alabama 35-21. LSU amassed 611 yards of total
offense, which remains the most yards ever allowed by Alabama in a single game.
Davey’s 528 yards ranks second all-time in a single game in conference history
and is tied for the most yards ever thrown for in a single SEC game.
2. 1959 – Billy Cannon
versus Ole Miss
Billy Cannon’s historic punt return
for a touchdown in a 7-3 win over Ole Miss on Halloween Night 1959 is widely
regarded as one of the most famous in SEC history. But what many people forget
is his tackle on Jake Gibbs on fourth and goal from the 2 in the final seconds
of the game. Cannon, along with Warren Rabb, stopped Gibbs in his tracks to
preserve the win and extend LSU’s winning streak to 17 games.
3. 1996 – Kevin Faulk
versus Houston
In one of the most impressive
performances in SEC history, Kevin Faulk rushed for a then-school record 246
yards on 21 carries with a pair of touchdowns, one of which covered 80 yards. He
also brought back a punt 78 yards for another score. Faulk’s efforts helped LSU
rally from a 20-point, 34-14 fourth quarter deficit and defeat Houston 36-35. In all,
Faulk gained 376 all-purpose yards, including 106 on punt returns, 16 on kickoff
returns, and 8 receiving yards to go along with his 246 yards
rushing.
4. 2001 – Josh Reed versus
Alabama
Josh Reed played a large role in
Rohan Davey’s 528-yard performance at Alabama in 2001. Reed hauled in 19 catches for
293 yards and a touchdown. His performance set SEC records for both catches and
yardage. He was named National Player of the Week for his efforts.
5. 1997 – Cecil Collins
versus Auburn
A performance that some call the
most amazing in LSU history, Cecil Collins ran 27 times for 232 yards and a pair
of touchdowns. The Tigers lost the game 31-28 in the closing minutes. Two weeks
later, Collins’ career came to an abrupt end with a broken leg. He never played
another down for LSU.
6. 1977 – Carlos Carson versus Rice
Carlos Carson found his way into the LSU record book
on Sept. 24, 1977, when he caught five passes for 201 yards in a 77-0 rout of
helpless Rice. The unique thing was all five of Carson’s catches went for touchdowns.
7. 2003 – Justin Vincent
versus Georgia
Justin Vincent enjoyed the best
game of his career on one of the biggest stages. The freshman Vincent rushed 18
times for 201 yards as LSU hammered Georgia 34-13 in the 2003 SEC
Championship Game.
8. 1971 – Andy Hamilton
versus Notre Dame
In a rematch of Notre Dame’s 3-0
win over LSU in 1970, Andy Hamilton hauled in seven catches for 153 yards and
three touchdowns as the Tigers routed the Irish 28-8. The 20-point win,
considered one of the greatest night games in LSU history, marked the Tigers
first-ever win over Notre Dame.
9. 1982 – Al Richardson
versus South
Carolina
All-American Al Richardson set a
school record with 19 total tackles in a 14-6 win over South
Carolina.
10. 1939 – Kavanaugh goes
wild versus Holy Cross
Ken Kavanaugh scores four
touchdowns against Holy Cross in a 26-7 LSU upset of Holy Cross.
