| Biography: |
Matt Mauck’s first season of playing football for LSU featured a storybook ending, as he came off the bench to lead the Tigers to a 31-20 win over Tennessee in the SEC Championship game. He now heads into the 2002 season as LSU’s starter and hopes to write three more sequels to his first edition. Mauck completed his transition from minor league baseball player to major college quarterback when Rohan Davey went down against Florida last year. Despite facing a large deficit, he finished the game 11-of-22 for 132 yards and 2 interceptions. His next action came against Kentucky, where he played one drive for Davey and was 2-for-4 for 25 yards. In the SEC Championship game, Mauck took advantage of the running plays offensive coordinator included in the game plan for the rematch with the Volunteers. The redshirt freshman rushed for 43 yards and 2 touchdowns, completed 5-of-15 passes for 67 yards and was named the game’s MVP. Mauck endured a rough outing at the 2002 spring game where he completed 20 of 42 passes and threw five interceptions. Despite the bad day, he has the first support of the coaching staff and – more importantly – his teammates, who have labeled him a team leader on offense.
