Named 2002 Mr. Baseball in the state of Louisiana after enjoying a superb senior year in which he posted a 9-0 record and a 0.12 ERA ... worked 60 innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run on 18 hits with 13 walks and 91 strikeouts ... tied the state record for single-game strikeouts with 20 Ks in one contest ... also batted .479 (34-for-71) with 11 doubles, two triples, six homers and 48 RBI ... as a junior, led the Alexandria High to the 2001 Class 4A state championship game ... posted an 8-2 mark and a 0.78 ERA in '01 with 96 strikeouts in 58 innings ... also batted .365 as the team's clean-up hitter ... played quarterback for the Alexandria football team ... an honor roll student throughout his high school career.
